Garry Winogrand is famous for having said that he made photographs so that he could “see what things look like photographed”. In doing so, he made the lives of thousands of future photographers more difficult by laying claim to the most concise artist statement in the history of the medium. My own personal take on that mode of thought is that I make photographs to see things as I wish they were in reality. My visual sensibilities are cast from a combined love of renaissance art, the photojournalist greats, the post-war Japanese Provoke school, and a lifelong obsession with modernist and minimalist design. The camera acts as my interface between the world, and my desires. As such very little of my work has anything to do with banality, and nothing to do with things I don’t care about. I am naturally drawn to strong instances of line, contrast, and the relation of physical geometric form in the image to the inherent geometry of composition. The majority of my work is produced on film, using both the darkroom and digital methods to create my prints, depending on the desired result.
