Coming from a country and a family where there is little appreciation or understanding of art and fashion, pursuing my dream of becoming a photographer has not been easy. I see photography as a narrative tool with which to tell a story and evoke feeling. For me, photography is not just an artistic outlet, but also a way to connect with people beyond the limitations of language. Photography has became an obsession that has given me the opportunity to remove myself from the world around me and create work that is inspired from my experiences. My personal work is all about freedom...freedom of expression. I was born in the Ivory Coast and grew up in Guinea where I lived through multiple brutal war periods. One of my most vivid memories was migrating on foot from city to city in the Ivory Coast with my uncle to get to a nearby city to take a bus to safety in Guinea. During that period of my life there were times that I couldn’t go out at night or stay out whenever I wanted and not get in trouble. Going through that and moving to New York City and now living in L.A. seeing young people like myself that have the freedom to do whatever they want inspires me to capture their personalities and stories. I hope to one day have a collection of images that will inspire kids growing up in Africa, or other parts of the world, to go out, be creative and express themselves. Clients include: The Met Museum, The New York Times Mag, Bloomberg Businessweek, Runner’s World Magazine, Nikon, Instagram.
